When the Golden State sun is beating down, take a 40-mile drive to Lake Almanor and take a dip in its crystal clear waters. Ranging in depth from a few feet to a maximum depth of about 90 feet, this lake is the ideal place to swim, boat, fish, or tan.
Be sure to bring your telescope for extraordinary planetary viewing and stargazing. From the canyon ridge you look out to the vast skyline and enjoy breathtaking views as the brilliance of the Milky Way is not dimmed by city lights.
This is a vintage cabin next to an amazing canyon. It is very quiet and beautiful. We all slept well in the peace and quiet and darkness. I was worried that it was going to be too hot to be enjoyable in August but the weather was fantastic and the house stayed cool enough even though it only has a couple of window AC units. The kitchen is well stocked.
It's about a 30 min drive to the NP but you pass through Mineral which has a restaurant and a General Store if you need to get any essentials. If you're there multiple days and do a lot of driving then getting gas for your car is an issue. You'll need to drive to either Chester (25 miles from Mineral) or Red Bluff (35 miles from the cabin)to fill up so plan accordingly. I would suggest taking a day in Chester and maybe exploring Lake Almanor. Chester has a lot of cute shops and restaurants.
There is lots of space (inside and out) to spread out and either enjoy the amenities (game spaces/options, ponds, etc) or to find a quiet spot to read. Young adults and kids enjoyed it thoroughly. We had wonderful times together at the large eating areas. Just be aware that the cabin can be challenging for nonagile seniors - although we all managed!

Overall, we had an excellent time. The cabin has a lot of character and does have a lot of very fun amenities (we especially enjoyed the pool table). The decorations were very cool and we really enjoyed the wild west cabin feeling. That being said, the claim that there is central air is misleading, as it is two window AC units that you need to leave on all the time if you are visiting during the summer (we visited in early July) along with strategic placement of fans to cool the rooms that don't have AC units. The cabin floors could also use some maintenance as some of the linoleum is chipping and some of the carpet nails are exposed (which did result in a few pokes and scrapes). I also needed to clean the back bathtub before giving my kids a bath as it was pretty obvious from the dead bugs and dust that it hadn't been cleaned in a while.

The house was definitely rustic and the location was great for our Lassen visit.
It was perfect!! My three teens and I just needed to get away and reconnect. That's exactly what happened, between chilling in the hot tub and spa, roasting marshmallows by the fire outside, and going on a nice uninterrupted walk, and cooking together, it was a time I will always treasure.
