What a great few days. Super comfortable. The lake was a highlight. If you get a chance rent a pontoon! So much fun.

  • Don't vacation during covid

This review will likely not reflect your experience, but I wanted to share mine because it has more to do with the owner than the property itself. I booked this vacation back in February, prior to the pandemic. When things went crazy, I decided to keep the reservation because it's the only vacation I would get for the year, and it was sorely needed. My primary deciding factor when booking this particular property was the lake. Prior to booking, I reached out to Donna to ask about access, because it looked like swimming directly from the property wasn't an option, She confirmed "Yes, the boat can be launched from the path in the photo but it is not a good spot for swimming. The pool and sandy beach are a couple of minutes by car." So I booked, Covid happened, and I was in touch with Donna a few more times to confirm that she was still renting and I was keeping the reservation. A day after arriving, I discovered that there was no access to the main pool or the beach because there was construction happening that had been going on for a few months (confirmed by the HOA manager). At no point did Donna reach out to me to let me know that anything had changed. When I sent an (admittedly) heated message about the lack of lake access and a request to have the rest of the trip refunded, I was told that I was being unreasonable and her explanation for why I wasn't informed of the closure was that "We had no discussion about the lake beach so there was no need to discuss construction issues with you". She also used the pandemic as a vague excuse. We did in fact discuss the access, see previous quotation. She basically told me I could swim from the boat launch (which she said was not an option previously) or the dog beach (a tiny strip of sand that would obviously be urine soaked), or drive to the complete opposite side of the lake to the smaller pool (about the size of a standard one family pool) where we would need to wait our turn and potentially oust actual residents. None of these options were particularly appealing for obvious reasons. She had the nerve to say in a subsequent email that she "went to a lot of trouble" on my behalf and berated me a second time for being "unreasonable" and leaving two days into the vacation. So, renter beware. If you don't care about the lake and you don't mind cobwebs and clutter everywhere, this might actually be a great place to rent.

    Manager's Response:

On the third day of a four day booking, Jackie abruptly emailed me that she was leaving and demanded a refund. It was at this point that I pointed out to her other options beside the main pool and beach area, for swimming. We have a second pool at SHL and the lake itself can be accessed from several points including from the row boat in front of my house. I was assured by VRBO, whom I consulted at the time, that I was not responsible for the actions of SHL or the rules regarding construction set by Govenor Cuomo. These issues changed from day to day due to the pandemic and required some flexibility on all of us coping with day to day changes. Jackie was presented with a clean house, professionally disinfected prior to her arrival. I also offered her a full day on the day of check in. She arrived after 5.
