  • Outstanding Property

    5/5

We are a group of 12-15 that has a traditional of going to northern Minnesota each early to mid October. Given the larger size of our group, we normally rent a vacation property in "cabin country." This was our first time at the Ruth Lake Retreat, and all agreed this was one of the finest locations we've had in years. It's a gorgeous property with a great number of bedrooms wonderful kitchen, pool table / foosball table, complete with amazing lake views. If the property is available next year, we'd definitely consider a return trip!

  • It was perfect, only missing one thing...

    5/5

It was perfect, but only missing one thing... a boat / pontoon rental. The lake was so nice. The sunset was beautiful... would had loved to be out there. We will definitely return though because location was great and house was beautiful and big for our big family! Some minor issues with bathroom doors not closing or locking, but we made it work. It rained twice on us so the pool table & other games along with the many TVs provided kept us company inside. Had many memorkes at the bonfire too. Yard was big enough for the kids to run around. Like the basketball hoop. Overall, great experience.

  • Great Lake Property for Large Groups

    4/5

We had a great time at Ruth Lake Retreat with our large family group of adults and kids aged 2 to 18. The interior is spacious and has plenty of spaces for people to gather or spread out for puzzles, reading, board games, movies, etc. The pool table is nicely situated in the main common area and was a frequent gathering spot. There is a lot of taxidermy, which provided a constant talking point for the group and was enjoyed by the kids. The outdoor property and lake area is beautiful- the yard full of mature pine trees and the lake area mostly sandy with a nice sand beach area perfect for younger kids to play and walk in/out of the water. There is a grassy berm between the yard and the lake which was fun to walk along and a good spot to enjoy some lake and sunset views.

    Pros:

-large and spacious, plenty of common space for a group of 20

    -clean and nicely finished interior

    -beautiful yard and lake area

-sandy beach, shallow lakeshore with mostly sandy bottom was great for younger kids to play in the water

-great sunset views from this west-facing property

-private setting- no neighbors can even be seen from the main property, and only one other dock is anywhere close to the dock on this property. The property is on a somewhat higher speed county road, but there was very little traffic

-town is less than a 5 minute drive away, which made runs for groceries or household items very convenient

-friendly and helpful management/owners- i had several questions answered promptly.

    Cons:

-the listing specifies central air conditioning, but it actually just has several in-wall type units, of which one or two are in common areas and the rest in some bedrooms. Some of the upstairs bedrooms have no direct cooling and could get quite warm on hot days despite ceiling fans.

-the dock area lacks some polish- there were several exposed metal rebar posts holding up a retaining board which were trip and fall hazards for younger kids, and the patio was uneven and had some wobbly blocks

-the gazebo structure pictured in the listing was not available for use. Would be a nice space for shade and tucking away lawn chairs, water toys, etc. during rain if it was available.

-not much outdoor seating or tables were provided

-there is only 1 bathroom upstairs where the bulk of the bedrooms are. The other two full baths are within the downstairs bedrooms. Sometimes there was a wait for showers for some of the group

-berm blocks lake views if sitting in the yard or by the campfire
