Location Details

Nestled on 2 acres, this charming cabin provides guests with that far-away feeling while still being close to a host of outdoor adventures and Grand Rapids' metropolitan luxuries and attractions!

Wake up early to catch the sunrise on Trout Lake before spending a day on the water! Take time to watch the local bald eagles catch fish to feed to their young - all right next to the dock. A water skier's and boater's dream, the lake is 4.5 miles long, providing hours of fun! At the end of the day, tie your watercraft to the home's private dock. The public boat launch located at the north end of the lake, with easy access off of Highway 169.

Explore the spectacular “Edge of the Wilderness” National Scenic Byway that begins in Grand Rapids and ends 41 miles north in Effie. The winding road takes you by pristine lakes, over rolling hills, and through majestic forests, creating a scenic drive for everyone. If you're looking for more adventure, hike and mountain bike the Chippewa National Forest or Suomi Trails, both within a short drive of the cabin. There's plenty of outdoor recreation, interpretive sites, and other exciting opportunities awaiting you!

Visit Mt. Itasca, home to the U.S. Junior National Biathlon team! Only one of only a few ski jumps in the US that is equipped for summer training. It is quite a sight to see jumpers practicing on a hot day in July! The area also offers paved trails for roller-blading, hiking, and biking.

Take a night off from cooking to dine at the Saw Mill Inn or pick up pasties, a meat and veggie filled pastry, from Pasties Plus. These pastries are considered some of the best in the country! Plus, check out Judy Garland's birthplace, exhibits at the Itasca County Museum, and the Forest History Center, which shares the story of Minnesota’s logging industry.

  • Girls weekend

    5/5

We had a great girls weekend. We loved the loft with all the beds. It was great to all sleep in the same spot! The wood stove was great for those chilly fall nights. The cabin had everything we needed! We will definitely be back!! Probably a girls summer weekend so we can enjoy the beautiful lake!!

  • Thank you!

    4/5

Thank you for sharing your cabin with us! We had a lovely relaxing weekend. The space has all the basic things you will need. It's cozy and the star of the show is the view of the lake. The space is getting some finishing touches with the addition of the new sun room, but is still totally wonderful. Classic Minnesota cabin :)

  • A True Northern Gem

    5/5

We had a great time at Northern Jem. It was exactly what we were hoping for: a log cabin nestled in beautiful fall colored trees, catching fish kayaking on a clear blue lake, cool fall weather and warming ourselves by the wood burning stove. We even got a glimpse of the bald eagle fishing from the lake. A perfect get away. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us.

  • You must rent this cabin!!

    5/5

The Northern Gem was everything we needed and more for our vacation! The cabin and property were spacious and clean. They have chairs and a picnic table for sitting on the patio and have a new porch that was a great place to eat and play games, etc. The owner was very informative and easy to work with! The kitchen is stocked with everything we needed! The only thing that could be improved are the mattresses in the loft! Going down to the dock has a lot of stairs but was great exercise! There is a nice dock by the water. We rented a pontoon from R&R in Grand Rapids. They deliver and pick up!! The cabin is in a great location, very close to Grand Rapids. Our favorite places to eat were Sammies Pizza, Mad Dogs and Rapids Brewery! It is very close to Eagle Ridge golf course, which also has a nice restaurant/ bar/ golf course! Thanks for helping us to have a great vacation!
