  We had an extraordinary stay. I spent a ton of time out on the deck. It is lovely. The whole place is awe inspiring. The kitchen is incredibly lovely. The only part that is lovelier than the house is the beach.

  It was uncomfortably hot, too hot to sleep at night and there was a damp feel throughout the entire house. We noticed a musty smell and several areas of mold on drywall. Drywall tape was hanging loose and doors not closing properly, just too much dampness to be comfortable.

  From the owner: "Hello Denise, Sorry to hear things did not go as planned during your stay at Dragonwood!
  I can understand that you did not feel it was useful to call me about how hot it was during your stay - with record breaking temps, and thunderstorms nearly every afternoon, the entire area was hot, humid and difficult to manage.
  If you had contacted me though, I might have suggested a few things, which may have helped make the house cooler and more comfortable for you.
  Our passive air cooling consists of the turret’s two operating windows, which when fully cranked open will allow the cooler air from the ledge basement to draft up through the house. Added to that, are four box fans, light enough to position wherever they might be needed, and which help exchange and circulate the air flow - from the 22+ windows in the house. Finally, we also have a self-emptying dehumidifier running in the basement - perhaps that needed attention?
  Regarding the handmade doors, hung from wooden hinges - yes, the years have added a little more quirkiness to them. This fall, starting in September, we have scheduled to continue to address window replacements, and freshening the paint. I am, however, following through directly with the drywall tape question - which could only be from ’new work’, which absolutely should not happen, so I do appreciate you pointing it out!
  The seashore is by definition a damp place, but clearly it was extra damp during your stay. I do wish you had taken me up on my offer to ‘text me’ if you have any kind of question, and to try to come up with a solution which might have worked for you, but I hope this has not put you off this beautiful location for good.   Had a wonderful week in the castle. It is very children friendly with lots of games, DVDs and books. We even did the castle scavenger hunt. The children loved catching crabs on the beach. The host was amazing and spent an hour on the phone with me before our visit with suggestions on where to go and what to see during our visit. There was a brand new gas grill. The kitchen island was great for meals and games with room for everyone. The only problem we had was the spiral staircase up to the bedrooms. My mother is in her 80s and could not make it up the stairs so she had to sleep in the bed by the front door. Luckily there is a full bathroom on the main floor that she could use.

  The rocky shoreline and private tidepools were amazing. The large kitchen bar was great for meals and family games. The castle was quirky and spectacular and the long house that is under construction makes us want to come back! We had a great time in Maine.
