  I had made a reservation, paid in full, received confirmation, but upon arrival the key was not in the lockbox, the deadbolt to the front door was drilled out and the contact name/number we had been given went to voice mail and the message was not returned. Upon further investigation, we discoveres that the entire house was being renovated and was uninhabitable. At 7pm, we were left to find alternate accomodations, with our reservation being for 8 adults, 2 children and our dog. We had purchased groceries on the way to the house, and had no way to refrigerate or cook them. The vrbo rep I contacted was not able to find any other accomodations of a home for the weekend in the area. I had to find hotel rooms instead. I cannot express how upsetting this experience was. My son was receiving his doctorate and this was supposed to be a special weekend with all of our adult children gathered in a location to honor him.While this is the first email I received from VRBO requesting these details, I did receive an automated "rate your stay" request from VRBO.I do not understand how such a serious breakdown in communication occurred. I am deeply disappointed in a company I entrusted with such a special occasion for our family!

• Terrible experience

  My daughter and son in law were going to stay with us in this house. They arrived before we did. My daughter called me and told me the lockbox was open, no key in the lockbox, there was a hole in the door where the deadbolt should be, and the door was ajar. When they looked inside the partially open door they saw a jumble of objects on the floor. She thought transients might have broken in and did not enter. When I arrived about 30 minutes later I tried to contact the owner with the contact information provided by Evolve but the phone was not answered and I did not get an email reply. I called the Urbandale Police and met two officers there. After inspecting the interior they told me they did not think anyone broke in but that there were tools, paint cans, and other materials indicating someone was recently working on the interior. Needless to say, we did not stay there. My daughter and her family spent two nights in a hotel and my wife and I and our dog slept on the floor at my sister's home. This experience ruined our Thanksgiving with family in the Des Moines area where I grew up and went to school through high school.

  The pluses to the property; location and sleeping areas. The beds were comfortable and had the layout that we needed for adult children and spouses.

  However, the house was dirty. The lawn was not mowed, outside garbage cans overflowing and no where to put the garbage from inside the house when we left.

  The front entrance had just had new cement walkway and was caution taped off. The basement entrance was unlocked and the door handle fell off in our hand. My husband bought a set of tools and fixed it so we wouldn’t have anymore issues.

  There was painters tape in many places and half painted areas throughout the house. There was a missing threshold between one of the bedrooms that had exposed carpet tack strips. Understandably, it looked like they may be trying to fix the place up. We can accept that to a degree. Outlets hanging out of the wall not acceptable.

  It was a very dirty home. The ceiling fans and air vents are covered in dust that is just hanging. However, the stick on breast covers that were stuck to the closet doors in the downstairs bedroom were the final straw. Very disgusting. We were not able to get in touch with host contact after finding all of these issues. Her phone went to voicemail with a full inbox.

  We have never had to leave a bad review when renting. This one warranted it unfortunately!

  Hopefully, they can turn it around and hire some decent cleaning people and be better with this property.

• Clean and comfortable

  It’s rare that our whole crew has a bed to sleep in, but this place was a comfortable, clean and convenient stay.
