I am generally hesitant to leave anything less than a five-star rating, but this just wasn't a five-star experience. Before you read too much further and let your imagination go too far, let me start with this; the property owner is legitimately a kind, thoughtful person, and they definitely did what they could to ease our stay. They stayed in contact with us throughout the trip, and when complications arose, they did their best to work with the situation and keep us in the loop.
That said, the main concern for us was actually privacy. It should be noted that the property is a duplex, with the rentable portion being up top and the owner living underneath.
Our first night of the stay was pretty chaotic. There was a water leak in the house. We noticed some mild wet spots on the carpet and a couple of drips on the wall but didn't think much of it since it was right by the laundry and air conditioning vent. We had all showered and gone to bed when there was a loud knock at the door somewhere around midnight. None of us had woken up fast enough to answer the door before the owner let themselves in along with repair personnel. That by itself was a bit jarring. Most vacation rental homes are owned by people who don't live so close, so I imagine this is a more unique situation.
But I'm fairly positive that if we had rented from just about anyone else, in any other house with the same type of water problems, we still wouldn't have had our privacy compromised like that. The situation would likely have been dealt with in the morning instead of in the middle of the night. To be fair here, I did get several missed calls previously, but from an unknown, unannounced number. I am not in the habit of answering anyone that late at night, particularly from a number that has not contacted me before, and that seemed very suspicious. The subsequent texts were more helpful but still didn't really prepare us for having the premises entered without actually gaining our permission first.
We're not entirely sure what the "standard" expectation is for an allowance of such privacy, but we did not feel at ease when we woke up and found two strange dogs in the front entry of the home, right where the stairs leading to the owner residence are (interior stairs, on our side of the door), which led us to assume (correctly, I think) that the owner had indeed let themselves into the house, presumably to check on the water damage. That was very disconcerting, and we didn't love it.
The place was clean. It had everything that we needed. We weren't bothered at all by the owners staying beneath us, who were friendly when we saw them in the driveway. It had everything that we needed for an enjoyable stay : )
Nice pet friendly home. Exactly as advertised.
